Hey everyone and Happy Thanksgiving!

The first article - "Entrepreneurs See a Web Guided by Common Sense"

Web 3.0 has not yet happened but will in the near future. This "world-wide database" will not only connect documents, but connect data as well. According to designers of the new "semantic web" the web 2.0 qualities are not detailed enough and do not meet the needs of every single web user. In web 2.0, travel look-up takes hours to completely put together a package. In the new Web 3.0, the same search would be put together as if it were done by a travel agent. The ideas of web 3.0 are decided, but what is still left up in the air is how and when these systems will be built. One agreement is in place, and that is that the new search will be more valuable than today's engines. It is hard to have users vote as to what they feel is important in a search engine. Web 2.0 uses "Page Rank" to list systematically what is important to users. In Web 3.0, there is thought of using Radar's technology. This allows users to collaborate and add their thoughts on all aspects of the web. This is done by storing associations as opposed to text or numbers. "One sample system created using the technology is Opine, which is designed to extract and aggregate user-posted information from product and review sites." In today's web, you have to sort through user comments according to when they left them and not relevance. In web 3.0 the web would automatically weigh and rank all comments and find the right thing for a specific user. The main idea is to have machines doing intelligent things to help users more thoroughly and less stressfully. Lenat building Cyc (an A.I. system) shows that we are moving towards more advance technological machines, and also more human-like and knowledgeable ones.

The main debate in this article is whether A.I. will be the driving force behind web 3.0 or of it will happen in a more natural manner.

Questions:
What is your prediction on the main debate?
Would you prefer the new web 3.0 rather than the 2.0 version that we are using right now?
What personal benefits would users get from the new version of Web 3.0?
in what ways is Web 2.0 losing appeal?

The second article - "Web 2.0 isn't Dead"

This article is about Web 2.0 not losing its steam. Although there is a lot of talk about the Semantic web, or Web 3.0, there is not much action. There is a lot of creativity and enthusiasm, however. The fact that the machines will be more than basic search tools and have "intelligence" will take time. 2.0 is not going anywhere anytime soon because 3.0 still needs to be fully developed and made perfect yet. It will be added to the new web, not replacing it and there will be a ton of them connecting together over time. There has been emphasis on A.I. while talking about this new web, but Spivack says that it is not necessary for the goal of Semantic web. Web 3.0 is not to be set apart from the now, it is to be worked in slowly. It is already being used with some companies (i.e. yahoo food is using it) but it is not available to the public yet. 2.0 will be around for much longer than we may think.

Questions:
Are you looking forward to Web 3.0?
How much longer do you think it will take for 2.0 to become 3.0 and why?
Do you think that the new web will really fit right into the old web or do you think it will be a lot different and harder to use?

The third article - "Web 2.0 vs. Bubble 2.0"
(I am a bit confused because this article says nothing about Bubble 2.0, but I'm just going to go with the article and not the title)

A cartoon is what starts the article. "I know! I keep writing in my blog .... and you pay me!!" Web 2.0 is a lot of groups or projects connecting to each other. Joi states that it actually may be the platform for the future of greedy people. On web 2.0 anyone can publish it's content whereas 1.0 was overly complicated. The content can be retrieved very easily by a broad audience whereas in 1.0 was just sending people what they already know in mass. In 2.0 you control and own whatever you your content is, and in 1.0 as soon as you uploaded it to a site they owned it.

Questions:
Which do you believe is//will be larger - the jump from web 1.0 to 2.0 or the jump from web 2.0 to web 3.0? Why?
Do you think that everyone has control over their content on a site? If not, give an example.
What do you think that Joi meant when stating "it's possible that Web 2.0 is becoming the platform for the short-term future of greedy people?"

supply and demand

Web 1.0 is simple, and not very efficient. Sure, it did the job when the need was not as imminent as it has grown to be, but web 2.0 has become a staple in our society. “Web 2.0 vs. Bubble 2.0” promotes the idea that web 2.0 has become a platform for greedy people. I can understand where this idea would rise, web 2.0 gives an outlet for anyone to publish content... and you own your content, a number of people have become billionaires almost overnight... exploiting the web 2.0 phenomena.
But I will still argue the fact that Web 2.0 has evolved because there was a need for it. The simple economic concept of 'supply and demand' can easily answer why web 2.0 has grown into what it is today.... There was a NEED for it, people demanded something more efficient.
As far as web 3.0, I have to say I am skeptical, like it was mentioned in “Entrepreneurs see a web guided by common sense”; it doesn't seem obtainable that you could give common sense to a machine. It doesn't seem probable, but it is not impossible. Technology is an amazing thing, and with the 'supply and demand' in our economy, if there is a demand for it... there is certainly someone waiting in line to supply it, and be the next big household name.

Web 2.0 ->3.0

In the articles we read for this week we have learned how we are slowly moving from web 2.0 to web 3.0. In my opinion this is happening but i don't believe it will a form of artificial intelligence for quite some time, a very long time. The article explains how travel plans arranged online will be more like visiting a travel agent because you will be able to enter search blocks like clean, sunny, warm, traveling with an 11 year old. But i believe that all the choices that would come up when we searched from 2.0 could be sectioned off in 3.0, for example the "traveling with an 11 year old" there could be a search that would have all the appropriate ages and if an 11 year old doesn't come up then the option of that resort or destination would be eliminated. The same could be done for warm, have different options warm, hot, cool, cold. I think that at least in the start it will be more of a key word intelligence than a computer actually thinking for us to make our lives simpler. I think that although eventually 3.0 will definitely find us,I think its kind of a creepy concept. I never saw the movie but iRobot, i'm pretty sure is about smart robots who get too smart and turn on us, well what happens if the computers get "too smart" and turn on us. The computers in our cars, planes, hospitals... THEY COULD TAKE OVER THE WORLD! So i think that a limited web 3.0 will be awesome and continue to make our lives more simple, I also think that there should be a limit on how smart we can make these computers. I think that web 2.0 is losing appeal because its old, in our world a computer purchased yesterday is out of date and the web is no different. People want to see what is next in the world of web.
I believe that web 3.0 is around the corner but i believe that at first web 3.0 will be like a new born baby, and have very little of the planned "intelligence". In my opinion we have already begun to move into web 3.0 everyday there is a new toy to play with on the internet. I think the facebook update that made stalking even easier (who would have thought) was a step in the direction, we don't even have to post it to our pages it automatically tells everyone. This is what I can see as the future of the web an internet that little work has to be done to find out information. I think it will take years before a computer can think for itself. I also think that it will be a change that will annoy many people. People don't like change most of the time even when it is for the better. I think that it is going to take a lot of work for people to get use to a new time of web.
I think that the jump from web 1.0 to 2.0 would have been much larger than the future jump to 3.0. This is because in the beginning all we knew was having other people update the internet, then all of a sudden we were able to run the web on our own. What we wanted online, we could have. I feel as though the move to 3.0 will take much longer (several years) so it will be more of a constant step forward rather than a big leap. I think that people have control of their content to a certain extent, if we post something on CNN we can put it up say what we want AND as long as it fits their guidelines it will stay, but we can't take it down. I think when he spoke of greedy people, Joi meant that people can create their own web site, create a blog and have people subscribe to it, so people can pretend or actually have knowledge and then charge people to view that knowledge.

response to readings

The idea of web 3.0 sounds really advanced which definitely fits with today’s world. I don’t doubt that the database will be created in the near of future. If creators are already thinking about it then I don’t think they will wait long to actually begin to build it. The newer version does sound very helpful and useful but it also sounds a little far fetched. The goal is to find out what users prefer (a good goal indeed) but there are billions of people surfing the internet at all times I think it would be impossible to have each of them satisfied. The concept of allowing people to leave comments is definitely a smart one. I do think that this will help them find what is appealing for many users, but unfortunately not all users. Moving on to the second article, I do look forward to 3.0 because hopefully it will make more information readily available for everyone. I think that it may take time for people to adjust to the changes when 3.0 is actually set up because the system will be more complicated. Fortunately, the internet is a prominent part of today’s society so most people should already have experience with web 2.0. I think that the jump from 1.0 to 2.0 will be bigger because the adaptation in the second version allotted users more freedom. It also made easier for people to connect and communicate. Although I do think that usage will once again rise when 3.0 is built, 3.0 is not dramatically changing how people can act on the internet, it is changing how they can respond to things already on it. Yes, 3.0 is allowing users to add comments about the site, but the “comment” feature is already part of 2.0 in many forms, one for example being blogs.

It seems that Web 3.0 will require a more advanced level of artificial intelligence; this will come into play significantly more than previous Web version. New advancements in Internet-related technology are always interesting, and I have a feeling Web 3.0 will be as impressive as Web 2.0 was when it began. Web 3.0 will make the system more intelligent and efficient for users in ways that are not as appealing in Web 2.0. It would seem as if the Web is ripe for its next stage of development, and whether this transition will be smooth or not remains to be seen. The size of the leap from 2.0 to 3.0 is bound to be substantial.

The idea of web 3.0 is something I can definitely see fitting into the technology patterns evolving. However, I can’t see its immediate entrance to “our world” in the very near future, but I am sure it is in its early steps somewhere. I do look forward to some of its advances and new journey it is sure to provide for the internet. Some of the ideas sound a little “out there” but then again they may be helpful and I just don’t know it. I can see the desire to help people online, like the part where people could leave comments, which have been known in other sites to be helpful. But there are also a prominent part of Blogs which are a part of 2.0. However, I don’t think the large number of people on and using the internet every second has been taken into account. I don’t think there will be as much trouble going from web 2.0 to 3.0 because Net users have already been accustomed to the jump from 1.0. I do think more people will be using the 3.0 because of the previous advances and the new advances it will promise and provide.

Personally I am looking forward to web 3.0 because of the "intelligent" searches it will be capable of. By allowing users to put in things that pertain to them or their searches it will enable people to find things they are looking for easier and faster. Web 2.0 is not necessarily losing appeal aside from that it doesn't offer the things that web 3.0 does. I am looking very forward to web 3.0 however i am nervous to see how the online community reacts to it. It will be interesting to see how certain websites respond and upgrade to web 3.0 status and if certain pages wont be able to support specific ad's or navigation due to a difference between 2.0 and 3.0. I think it will be a bigger jump from web 2.0 to web 3.0 because of the wide range of features web 3.0 will enable users to apply to the web.

just thinking about what the jump from web 2.0 to web 3.0 makes my head real. on the one hand people who will most eperience that will have always been emersed in the digital web world. So changing might be easier for them to adapt, where as I think we are pretty good b/c we have had interet from about grade school up- i personally cant even think about what would happen in the future. I am already confused by 2.0! perhaps that is because web 1.0 is so simple and I do not require maddening capablities the way some do.

to add on to what I just said....I think the reason people are already itching for a new web system is the impaience of our society due to commercial marketing....we buy computers and month later that computer compan has a new modle that blows yours away. we have taken this sort of behavior into our everyday life. a little is never enough we want it all and we want it fast!!!
